Activities to Try with Your Elderly Loved Ones in 2025
Category:
It can be challenging to find ways to keep your elderly loved ones active. It can be even harder to find ways they enjoy.
That being said, there are a myriad of benefits to staying active for older adults. For example, it lowers the risk of heart disease, improves balance and coordination, and reduces the risk of developing dementia, to name a few.
Since being active is so vital for seniors, we’d like to start 2025 by recommending a couple of local activities that are ideal for older adults. Especially those who are looking to stay active.
Caregivers can help
While it is incredibly important for older adults to stay active, you may be concerned about them doing so by themselves. That being said, we are here to help! A Griswold Caregiver can accompany your loved ones through all these activities. Whether it’s the Caregiver taking your loved one to a local senior center for recreation, or it’s you, your loved one, and one of our Caregivers all going somewhere together, it’s important your loved one feels supported and safe. Through our Companionship Care, our Caregivers will happily support your loved one through the day.
Local Activites
50+ Softball League – The City of South Bend Venues Parks & Arts (SBVPA) host adult softball leagues during the summer. They also have a senior only league, perfect for your older loved one who still has the itch to be active.
Pickball – There are many parks throughout South Bend that now have Pickleball courts! You can find courts at Coquillard, Tarkington, Leeper, Boehm, and Keller Parks.
St. Joseph Senior Fit Class – Senior Fit is a free physical fitness exercise program for those aged 55 and better. Classes are taught by fitness professionals and focus on upper and lower body strength, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, and balance.
Chair Yoga – Chair yoga is practiced while sitting on a chair or using one for support and is designed specifically for those with physical disabilities or those who find a typical yoga session too challenging. Classes are held every Monday at Howard Park.
Forever Learning Courses and Trivia – Seniors 50 years of age or older come to Forever Learning Institute to enhance and share their knowledge in a formal classroom setting. Our semesters are ten weeks in length and are taught by volunteer subject-matter enthusiasts simply for the joy of teaching and learning. They also host a yearly trivia night!
Griswold Cares
While it may be difficult to find activities your loved one will enjoy, we hope that this guide has provided some fun options for you to consider. While we only highlighted a few, there is plenty to do in both South Bend and Elkhart that was not included in this blog.
Furthermore, if you notice your loved one may not be as sharp and active as they used to be, it might be time to consider in-home care. Our Caregivers can provide you with peace of mind while allowing your loved one to age in their own home. Give us a call today, we’d be happy to create a personalized care plan that fits your needs.
