Bathroom Products You Might Not Realize Your Parents Need
Category:
Aging at home works well for your mom and dad. You took all of the precautions and set up their house to be safe. You thought about fall risks. You keep their kitchen stocked. You’ve done all of the right things, but there still be one area you overlooked.
As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases. As a result, your skin dries easily and isn’t as supple. Your hair’s pigment cells die off, which causes hair to go gray, silver, or white. White hair can take on a yellow hue.
One other issue is that balance and flexibility can change. Bending over in a shower can be harder to manage. If the knees, ankles, or toes are affected by some form of arthritis, getting in and out of the shower is also harder. For all of those reasons, these products are must-haves in the bathroom.
A Shower Chair
A shower chair makes it easy to sit down while shaving. If that’s a problem your mom has, a folding shower chair is a great solution. She can sit down, shave her legs, and remove the chair for the rest of her shower.
If your mom or dad has arthritis, a shower chair also makes it easy to shower from a seated position. Pair the shower chair with a handheld shower wand for easy bathing while sitting down.
Gentle Moisturizers
Keep the skin moisturized with a gentle moisturizer. Many manufacturers sell spray-on moisturizers now to make them easy to apply. If your parents want to trap as much moisture in the skin as possible, look at moisturizers that are applied to wet skin.
Shampoo and Conditioner for White and Grey Hair
White and gray hair often pick up yellow tones from environmental factors like smoke, dyes, and minerals. If your parents are using a hair product that contains yellow dye, their hair may start to yellow as a result. Mineral deposits like iron or sulfur in the water may also lead to yellowing. Smoking or exposure to a lot of smoke can also cause it.
To counteract it, your parents need hair products without dyes. Clear shampoos or specially designed products that remove yellowing are best. Make it a habit to read the labels and look for yellow dyes in the ingredients.
If the water quality is an issue, a showerhead that contains a water filter is one option. A whole-house water filtration system is another option. Finally, get your parents to stop smoking or spending a lot of time close to someone who does smoke.
