On September 26, 2024, Nina Weiler-Harwell, Ph.D., Associate Director at AARP, delivered an insightful presentation at the Caregiver Coalition of San Diego focused on the vital role of family caregivers in California. Drawing on data from AARP’s 2023 report, she highlighted that approximately 4.4 million family caregivers in California provide around 4 billion hours of care annually, a contribution valued at over a quarter of the state’s budget.

Despite the immense economic impact, family caregivers often face significant financial and emotional burdens, with out-of-pocket expenses averaging $7,200 annually for those caring for loved ones. This challenge is exacerbated by an aging population; by 2060, over 30% of Californians will be 60 years or older, while the number of available caregivers is decreasing.

Weiler-Harwell also discussed the legislative landscape affecting caregivers. While laws like the Family Medical Leave Act and California’s Family Rights Act provide some protections, gaps remain, particularly for caregivers of choice—non-relatives or close friends. AARP is advocating for broader protections, including recent expansions to paid family leave, which now allows up to 70% wage replacement during caregiving leave.

The presentation emphasized the need for increased awareness and support for family caregivers, who are essential to California’s long-term care system. Resources are available through AARP, including guides on family leave, caregiving, and state resources tailored to meet various community needs.

As we look to the future, it is clear that supporting family caregivers is not just a personal issue, but a crucial policy matter that requires collective action and recognition. The insights shared by Dr. Weiler-Harwell serve as a call to action for policymakers, organizations, and communities to invest in the well-being of caregivers, ensuring they receive the support and recognition they deserve.
