The summer vacation season is almost over! Summer is the perfect time to take a break and visit your favorite travel destinations. It is also a great opportunity to get your elderly parents out of the house so they can also travel and enjoy everything the world has to offer. There are so many places to take elderly parents for fun, and this article will share just a few of them, both in the United States and beyond.

Best Places to Visit with Elderly Parents

When looking for places to take elderly parents, you want to make sure there will be enjoyable things for them to do and see and that it will also be accessible, especially if they have mobility issues. Florida and California are two US destinations that offer tons of choices for both you and your parents.

Florida has several great options for the elderly, like golfing, fishing, or just walking on the beach. Visit Orlando if you want the fast-paced tourist spots like Disney World or Universal Studios, along with shopping and restaurants everywhere you look. The Daytona Beach area has both spots to relax as well as shopping and other activities.

California has something for everyone. San Diego offers spots like Balboa Park and Old Town, where you and your parents can wander the streets taking in the views and visiting cute shops and restaurants. As you head north towards San Francisco, you have the option to visit Muir Woods and see the giant redwood trees or head up to Napa Valley to sample a variety of wines.

National Parks are also perfect places to go with elderly parents. They tend to be accessible, so you can drive to various sightseeing destinations in the park if walking is not your thing. Some large, beautiful National Parks you and your parents might enjoy are:

  • Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming with its geothermal springs, waterfalls, and chance to see wildlife like bison and elk.
  • Grand Canyon Park in Arizona generally speaks for itself, with plenty of lookout points and hiking trails.
  • Acadia National Park in Maine has plenty of driving areas so you can enjoy the scenery – especially in the Fall – without having to do too much walking.

Looking for places to visit with elderly parents outside of the US? There are some great options in Europe and Japan.

London in the United Kingdom is very accessible and easy to get around using public transportation. Many of their museums are also free, including the British Museum, Natural History Museum, and Imperial War Museum. You could also catch a show in the West End.

Tuscany, Italy is another great trip for seniors with so much to see and do. The well known cities of Florence, Seina, Pisa and San Gimignano are all in the region and within a few hours of each other. It is relatively easy to navigate and you can find something for everyone to enjoy.

Tokyo, Japan frequently caters to seniors as around 20% of the population there is over 70. Public transportation is accessible and easy to use and can bring you to gorgeous shrines, cherry blossoms, huge shopping areas, and other cultural sights in the city. It is also easy to visit other tourist destinations like Kyoto, Osaka and Nara from Tokyo using the bullet trains.
There are so many options when it comes to places for the elderly to visit. Spend some time chatting with your parents about what they enjoy seeing or places they would like to go and then do your research to check on accessibility and available activities. You can certainly find a location the whole family will enjoy.
